New Display of Old Photographs

The Alresford and District Museum, with the help of Godfrey Andrews at Alresford Heritage (www.alresfordheritage.co.uk), has refreshed the display of old photographs shown in the passageway leading to the Courtyard Tea Rooms in Broad Street. These pictures are a sample of those in the collection shown on the Alresford Heritage website, and hopefully will encourage residents to look at the other photos in the collection, and also loan any old photographs they have -for copying and cataloging in the same way.

While the Alresford Museum has no permanent premises to display artefacts, photographs and documents, there are display cabinets in Alresford Library, and in Artworthy Framing at the Old Fire Station. There are then photographic displays in the Broad Street passageway, and also in the window of Oakleaf Stationery, in West Street opposite the Co-op. These displays are changed at regular intervals: earlier in 2013 the Library display showed a selection of bottles from the breweries and ginger beer plants in Alresford. Currently the display shows photographs and books by Jane Bown, the Observer portrait photographer, who lived in Broad Street, Alresford, until recently.

The Museum committee also organise occasional talks and events to show off parts of their collection, which are publicised in the local media, like the Alresford Forum and What’s On. The Alresford Museum, originally conceived and established by Roy Robins in 2006, is a part of the New Alresford Town Trust (NATT), a registered Charity.

An associated organisation, the Alresford Historical and Literary Society, is active in the town, and organises monthly meetings – and local visits. There is also an annual publication available, Alresford Articles, the successor to Alresford Displayed. The society has a website, www.alresfordhistandlit.co.uk.

We hope you will be encouraged to help us record such things for the interest of future generations. The members of the Museum committees can be contacted via the websites, or direct by email to: clerk@towntrust.org.uk
